VA State Inspection Checklist

Before heading to Craftsman Auto Care for your VA State Inspection, use this checklist to visually assess the status of your vehicle!

1. Lights. Visually inspect all of the lights on your vehicle, including headlights, exterior lights, turn signals, and license plate lights. Make sure all are working and keep and eye on the condensation build-up inside the lights.

2. Mirrors and Horn. Check your mirrors for any cracks or chops, and that the horn is loud with no muffled sounds.

3. Dashboard Warning Lights. Any lights can indicate numerous issues with your car. Get any illuminated lights checked out before your inspection to avoid failing.

4. Tire Tread Depth. A common reason why vehicles fail their Virginia inspection is low tread depth. Check you tread at home with the penny test!

5. Listen for Unusual Noises. Hearing any strange rattles, clinks, roaring or squeals? Bring your vehicle in for a checkup before your inspection if anything seems out of the ordinary.

6. Windshield and Glass. Check your windshield and windows for any cracks or improperly placed stickers. Make sure the windshield wipers are working properly, and that the front and rear defrosters are in good shape.

The basic Virginia State Inspection involves testing the operation of the following:

1. The driver's seat; airbags, seat belts, and doors

2. Brakes and parking brake

3. Headlights and exterior lights, including turn signals and the license plate lights

4. All four tires, wheels, and rims

5. The horn, rear-view and side-view mirrors

6. The windshield, window glass, windshield wipers, and front and rear defrosters

7. The hood latch, engine belts, and all fluids

8. The steering and suspension systems and floor pan

9. The fuel and exhaust systems and air pollution controls
