Meet Relay: The Blue Autonomous Bus

Meet Relay, a self-driving electric shuttle who passes by our Merrifield location as it jumps between the Mosaic District and Dunn Loring Metro.

Craftsman Auto Care & Relay are no strangers. Before it’s big debut to the public on October 22, 2020 – We’ve gotten to know the blue autonomous vehicle at our shop as we’ve assisted with some repair needs.

Who is responsible for getting Relay up and running? We can thank the public-private partnership involving Fairfax County, Dominion Energy, the Virginia Department of Transportation, Virginia Tech Transportation Institute and our neighbors over at George Mason University.

Rides with our friend are free, but coronavirus restrictions have limited Relay to only three passengers on board at a time – when typically, it’s fit to host 12 passengers.

You can catch Relay racing the streets at a whopping 10 miles per hour, Monday – Thursday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. , looping around about every 15 to 20 minutes.
